When the Giants Leave: Finding My Own Faith

Growing up in the realm of faith, my path was illuminated by spiritual giants. These individuals weren’t just mentors; they were the Moses of my life, leading me through my own spiritual wilderness with their wisdom and conviction. In their presence, I felt an unspoken strength, as if together, we could part any sea of doubt. Yet, in reality, it was their faith that cast a light on my path, not my own. As time passed, these pillars of faith gradually left this world for their heavenly home, and with each departure, a light seemed to dim in my life. Challenges grew steeper, and my spirit felt the weight of their absence. It was a stark awakening to realize how much I had leaned on them, and in their absence, a profound question arose: How do I move forward when my spiritual guides are no longer by my side?

This period of introspection reminded me of Joshua, standing on the threshold of the Promised Land, Moses no longer by his side. The enormity of stepping out from Moses’ shadow to lead must have been overwhelming. Yet, in Joshua 1:9, God’s words to Joshua resonated deeply with me, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” These words became a beacon for me, highlighting the transition from dependence to personal discovery of faith. In this journey, I’ve come to appreciate deeply the role those spiritual giants played in my life. Their wisdom laid the foundation for my spiritual journey. They taught me how to pray with a fervent heart, to serve with unyielding dedication, to love without conditions, and to harbor faith as strong as a fortress. For this, my gratitude knows no bounds. They were not just passing figures in my life; they were architects of my spiritual foundation. Yet, the true essence of their teachings was not just in their actions but in the silent lesson of finding my own connection with God.

This realization was not an end but a new beginning, a step from the comfort of their shadows into the light of personal faith. Embracing this path led me to a deeper understanding of my spiritual self. It taught me that faith is not inherited or borrowed; it’s built through our struggles, questions, and the moments we choose to trust God despite our fears. This journey is intensely personal and uniquely ours, not a replication of someone else’s walk with God. Today, I find myself in a place of profound gratitude and newfound strength. Grateful for the giants who paved the way, and empowered by the realization that my faith is my own, nurtured by the lessons they imparted and the personal encounters I’ve had with God. In this transition from relying on the faith of others to discovering my own, I’ve learned that true faith is like a tree, rooted in the teachings of those who came before us but growing in the unique light of our personal relationship with God. This is a call to anyone who has ever felt overshadowed by the faith of others. It’s an invitation to step into your light, to cherish the lessons from the giants in your life but to also embark on your personal journey of faith. It’s about discovering that, in our moments of solitude, we are not alone, for God is with us, guiding us from the shadows into His glorious light.

Thank you for sharing. It is hard to be without the people who have mentored you. But it is like graduating from college – you then move on to bigger things and get to talk to God constantly about what is next in your life.
